Curly vs Wavy Hair Extensions — What's the Difference?
Curly and wavy hair extensions are two of our most popular textures, and while they can look similar in photos, they behave very differently once they're in your hands — and on your head. Here's how to tell them apart and decide which one is right for you.
The Look Curly hair extensions have a tighter, more defined coil pattern that holds its shape wash after wash. Think rich, springy ringlets with visible definition from root to tip. Wavy hair, on the other hand, has a looser, more relaxed S-shaped pattern — soft movement without the tight coil, closer to what you'd get from a beachy blowout than a curling iron.
If you want a bold, voluminous look with lots of texture, curly is the way to go. If you're after something more subtle and versatile — hair that can be worn straight-ish or wavy depending on your mood — wavy hair gives you that flexibility.
Care Routine Curly hair extensions need more moisture. Because the curl pattern makes it harder for natural oils to travel down the hair shaft, we recommend a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo and a leave-in conditioner after every wash, plus a light curl cream to reactivate and define the pattern. Detangle gently, always starting from the ends and working up, and use a wide-tooth comb only when the hair is wet and conditioned.
Wavy hair extensions are lower maintenance by comparison. A regular sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner routine is usually enough, and the looser pattern means it detangles more easily and holds up well between washes. A light texturizing spray can refresh the wave pattern on day two or three without a full rewash.
Styling Curly bundles are best left to air dry or diffuse on low heat to preserve the natural coil — over-brushing or heat styling can loosen the curl pattern over time. Wavy bundles are more forgiving: you can wear the wave as-is, loosely curl it for more definition, or flat-iron it straight for an entirely different look, since 100% human hair takes heat well.
Which Should You Choose? If your natural hair is already curly or coily and you want extensions that blend seamlessly, curly hair is usually the better match. If your natural hair is straight to wavy, or if you like switching up your style often, wavy hair extensions offer more day-to-day versatility.
Both textures are available in every length from 8 to 40 inches, in 200g and 300g weights, so the length and volume decision is entirely separate from the texture decision — you don't have to compromise on one to get the other.
